My Savage was new in May 1993 and has 5 gears.
The Suzuki owner's manual that came with the bike is dated October 1990, and contains the specifications for a 5 gear transmission.
There is no doubt that the first Savages had just 4 gears. But when did the change take place?
Probably over a few years. Maybe some countries got the 5 gear Savage before others ???

I recently saw a 2000 Savage. It was almost identical to my 1993 model. The 2000 has orange reflectors in front of the engine and mine does not. The 2000 has an essay written on the exhaust silencer - going on about emissions. Mine does not. Also the horn on the 2000 was bolted to the frame, infront of the engine, pointing to the left. My horn is between the forks, under the lower part of the steering stem and pointing forwards. My 1993 is a U.K. specification model where the 2000 was of U.S. specification. I suspect these are not so much differnces between the years, more differences between different market's specifications. Suzuki stopped selling the Savage here in the U.K. in 1997. I have only seen one other Savage on the road. They must not have sold well.

Happy Svaage riding.
